MORAA NYARIBO
"Uzi hupitia mahali sindano hupitiamo.” — The thread follows the needle.
From an early age, at my mother's fashion boutique, I was continually exposed to fabrics. I found their colour texture, and drapery to be particularly intriguing. I now have a deep desire to understand the textiles my ancestors interacted with and made.
Through my practice, I seek to create an environment for the preservation of these traditional practices through textile explorations that try to recreate the textures, shapes and overall feeling experienced by the people. I explore the different acts performed on and around the skin to enhance its aesthetic features by using woven textiles as a simulation of skin, hairdos, and beaded jewellery.
My work seeks to change the negative tone attributed to traditional practices by re-birthing this past and forgotten traditions into unconventional but beautiful textile surfaces.
